Changes

This is for those of you who used to live in Anchorage. Last weekend while I was out taking pictures I drove by the Sand Lake gravel pits. You remember those, don't you? The two huge pits dug in the ground on either side of Sand Lake road? I remember them distinctly because the one on the west side was where I tore my anterior cruciate ligament in a sledding accident. That was the worst pain I've ever had. Then I had to hobble home to our apartment on Wandering Drive.

Kris and I also used to take our dogs for walks down in the pits - there was plenty of room to let them run and a few ponds they could swim in without bothering anybody else.

I also took my kids there to pick fireweed blossoms for the one time I made fireweed honey.

Take a good look. This is the west side pit. People are actually living down there now! They've hauled in fill dirt and built houses. It's actually a very nice little neighborhood, but I can't help but think they are living in a gravel pit!

Isn't it amazing that they will put housing units in areas that once was low land, or flood land. Urban spraul as they call it.

I do wonder how much water is in the crawl spaces. Our subdivision is built on former swamps and we have always had a bit of a problem.

John Worked for Wilder and hauled a lot of that fill in there. If you remember they also had a five year battle getting the permits and the rest of the stuff needed just to do that cracker jack subdivision. On top of it all the people building in that old pit are paying the big bucks (probably beyond their means now)

It it's a gravel pit, it's disguised very well. Nice photo. I envy you in your photography. I guess I could go the the heart of Washington, DC and take some photos, but I can't help but see a crime ridden city.

You're causing me to get my camera and give it a shot when the whether breaks.

Love, peace and blessings.
