Scenic Alaska

This is one of my earliest watercolors. It's very similar to a scene I did in my "How to Paint with Watercolors" taught by Teresa Ascone. This is the class Tim arranged for me to attend as a Christmas gift about 13 years ago. It was one of the best Christmas presents he has ever given because it was so "me" and he even bought all the stuff to go with it like paper, paint, and brushes. It was perfect.

I have painted a few similar versions of this same scene because it is what I'm most familiar with and what I first learned to paint. Birch trees, mountains and snow. It's a great scene for a beginner so I've used it to teach a how-to watercolor class with high school-age kids at our summer camp and at an overnight event with my junior high class from church. We did it using watercolor cards and a simplified version of this picture. Here's one that my daughter painted when she was in 10th grade. She did a great job as did all the other kids.

I really love how watercolor paintings look, they always have a soft feel about them. Your first watercolor is great! I love birch trees. There were two very large birch trees in my yard when I was a kid. I remember playing dolls, games, and reading under those tress. I cried when they got a disease and had to be chopped down.
