Purple Mountain Majesties

America the Beautiful

Oh beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain.
For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain.
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood,
from sea to shining sea!

Our mountains do often look purple in the distance. I remember my sister Kris telling me when she was in grade school, in Florida or St. Thomas, she drew a picture of mountains and colored them purple. Her teacher told her that mountains aren't purple, they're green. Which is partially true if you live in an area where they call hills mountains because they've never seen a real mountain!

It was St Thomas I was told that that was the wrong color. It's art! You can use whatever color you want and I used a color that I see/saw on mountians back home. Bad teacher!

I will never forget the first time I saw the mountains looking purple. I was amazed. I live in the flatlands. I was an adult before I saw those beautiful mountains I had been singing about so many years.

It's funny how we don't really know something unless we live with it. I always kind of wondered about that phrase in that song, but then saw many pictures of mountains looking purple and definitely majestic.
