How long does it take to paint a house?

A long, long time ago (about 12 years) I was working part-time so we decided it was time to paint our house. I figured it wouldn't take very long, maybe a couple weeks. I asked my sister Alicia, "How long does it take to paint a house?" She and her husband do a lot more home improvement projects than we do, so I was trusting her judgement and knowledge. "I could do it in a weekend," she says, "but you, it will probably take you a year." We laughed....ha ha ha. (her more than me - I was slightly ticked off)

Our house was a light blue color but I wanted to go with a sage green. So I picked what I thought looked like sage green and began. After I got about a 10' x 10' section painted, I realized it wasn't the sage color I was looking for. It was quite a bit brighter, almost spring green in fact. We had already bought the paint so I was committed. "Maybe it will look better when it's done," I thought to myself. It didn't.
I painted the front and then both sides. From the road it looked pretty good. When I climbed up on the roof with my paint bucket I found my arms were too short, even holding the paintbrush, to get all the way around the chimney thingy. Plus I was a little scared and didn't want to lean out too far, so I left a bluish spot up there.

If you look at the pic of our house, you will see that there are panels with thinner strips in between. On the back of the house I painted all the thin strips first. Then I kind of fizzled out. For the next 11 years (yes, I said 11), my house was bright green on the front and two sides (except for the blue spot on the chimney) and the back was blue with thin green stripes. The garage was also blue. I never got to that part of the painting project. It was the worst mis-matched paint job on our entire street (and probably neighborhood) although we almost always have one of the nicest lawns. Tim is responsible for that.

Last summer we hired my sister Alicia, who has teased me all these years, to paint our house. We bought the paint and she painted. It took longer than a weekend but was certainly finished within a month. She did paint over our doorbell so that no longer works and she never got back to scrape the paint she painted on our windows....but I'm not complaining. As you can guess, I can put up with a lot, and a little paint on the windows is nothing compared to a striped house for 11 years.

man o man....that's so funny the way you tell it! I actually got a tear from laughing! Yeah...that paint on the back windows does bug me alot. I guess I'll have to do it...OR...maybe you could just do it then I wouldn't have to think about it any more!!!

(And it was three painful, exruciating weekends)

I was laughing as I read. I could just imagine your multi colored house.

A - there's paint on the garage windows too. Like I said, I'm not worring about it, so you probably shouldn't either.

Nothing beats a failure but a try. Unlike you, I have a very expensive Home Owner's Assoc. fee and they probably would have charged me until the job was done. Another reason I'm considering moving there, you can take up to 11 years to paint your house and nobody bothers you (lol)

Love, the gift and like I said, you are so very talented!

I'm so glad to know that other people have painting difficulties. I thought my family was the only one!

We repainted our house 5 years ago (thanks to our daughter) and there are still spots on the house that never got painted! Thank heavens those unpainted areas are on the back or side of the house where no one will see them...I'm embarrassed because it's been 5 whole years, going on 6 this summer.

But Patty! It was funny! Whenever I would come to your house I would think to myself, 10 years Alicia says.
