As you can see, the snow is up over the porch. That's my granny machine - Tim uses it when he's hauling stuff in. It's more of a workhorse kind of machine than the others we have.
This is the little birdhouse that Travis built that the squirrels demolished. It's got a heavy hat full of snow.
This is the outhouse. I don't have a summer picture for comparison, but you get the picture. It sits at ground level. Tim had to shovel out the front so he could even open the door. It's always a wee bit frosty around the seat - there is a large plastic spoon that I keep in there so that you can run it around the edges and scrape all the frost off before sitting down. It's still cold on your bum, but not as bad as it could be.

Wow, I just love it...a real Alaskan cabin. How long does it take to get the cabin warm when you first arrive?

It's warmed up in about an hour. We have two kerosene heaters that he starts first, then he starts the oil stove. Once it's warmed up (and the insulating is finished) he expects the oil stove to keep it warm without using kerosene to supplement.
I got to ask.....Don't you have a styrofoam seat for the outhouse? So much better for that run by visit. I'm on my way to Summit/Paxson to go ride in 5ft of new snow. It has warmed up to 0 and the machines are gassed up and extra barrels loaded yeeeeeha I love winter
We had a styrofoam seat when we lived at Dad's cabin when we were first married. But here, we haven't gotten around to it. At my old outhouse (at the other cabin) there is a sheet of styrofoam that we place over the seat and bench which keeps frost from forming.
